RESISTANCE IS FUTILE
Carly Rae Jepsen was meant to be a one-hit wonder and I will always stand behind that statement. “Call Me Maybe” shifted over 7 million units in the US alone and has been viewed on YouTube over 650 million times. Those stats are fantastic but despite the mega-success of her breakout single, Carls (my nickname for her) saw her star fading fast. Sure, she released a few more singles and did something on Broadway but nobody gave any fucks about it. I repeat: she was meant to be a one-hit wonder.
However, “I Really Like You,” Carly Rae’s idea of an I’m-not-done-yet-mama comeback single, was just released and…it…is…awesome. This song is pure, unabashed Pop with a catchy chorus that would make an A&R rep cream themselves. Who cares that she’s almost 30 years old, Canadian and can’t seem to muster up any self-confidence? “I Really Like You” is Top 40 gold, goddamn it!
What else does “I Really Like You” have going for it? The fact that it sounds like a Taylor Swift song (“New Romantics” to be exact). I’m hoping that someone makes a strong mashup of these two songs because that, my dear reader, would be BRILLIANT.
That being said, it looks like Carly Rae Jepsen might not be a one-hit wonder after all. She has pulled out a white rabbit (and a black one because it’s what’s most appropriate right now) and it will do you no good trying to ignore her.
The “Call Me Maybe” girl is back…and I like it.
